Stone in Practice: Four Case Studies in Modern Architectural Design

Bao Kien Design Department

Case Studies

Every architectural trend eventually meets the realities of a job site: budget, timeline, structural constraints, and daily wear. The projects below are illustrative case studies drawn from the kinds of briefs designers and homeowners bring to stone fabricators every day — a busy family kitchen, a boutique hotel lobby, a corporate reception, and a spa-style bathroom. Each one highlights a different decision point in choosing between natural marble and engineered quartz, and how Bảo Kiên's manufacturing and processing capabilities are applied to meet it.

Case Study 1 — The High-Traffic Family Kitchen

Design challenge: A growing family wanted a large kitchen island as the visual and social center of their home, but needed a surface that could withstand daily cooking, spills, and heat without constant sealing or maintenance.

Material solution: A warm-toned engineered quartz slab with calibrated, marble-inspired veining was specified for the island and countertops. Because engineered quartz has near-zero porosity, it resists staining from oil, wine, and acidic foods without the periodic resealing that natural stone requires.

Outcome: The family achieved the visual richness of natural marble with the low-maintenance performance the household needed, while a large-format slab kept the island virtually seamless, with no grout lines to collect grime.

Case Study 2 — The Boutique Hotel Lobby and Spa

Design challenge: A boutique hotel wanted its lobby and spa reception to feel like an extension of the natural landscape — warm, tactile, and memorable enough for guests to photograph — while standing up to constant foot traffic.

Material solution: A book-matched natural marble feature wall with a honed, matte finish anchored the reception area, paired with a monolithic reception desk cut from a single slab. The honed finish softened the marble's natural veining under low, ambient lighting and reduced the glare typical of high-gloss stone.

Outcome: The lobby became the hotel's signature design feature, reinforcing the brand's premium positioning, while the honed finish proved more forgiving of daily handprints and foot traffic than a polished surface would have been.

Case Study 3 — The Corporate Reception Floor

Design challenge: A corporate headquarters needed a reception and lobby flooring material that projected stability and quality to visiting clients, while meeting sustainability requirements tied to the building's green certification goals.

Material solution: Engineered quartz flooring in a warm neutral tone was selected for its consistent mechanical performance across large areas and its compatibility with transparent material reporting, an increasingly common requirement for commercial specification.

Outcome: The uniform quality of engineered slabs across the full order minimized visible seams across a large open floor plan, and the material's long service life supported the building's broader sustainability and total-cost-of-ownership goals.

Case Study 4 — The Spa-Inspired Bathroom Suite

Design challenge: A residential renovation aimed to recreate the calm, hotel-like atmosphere of a spa within a primary bathroom, without the surface feeling cold or overly formal.

Material solution: Textured, honed natural marble was used for the shower walls and vanity top, with a deep green accent marble reserved for a single feature niche to avoid visually overwhelming the compact space.

Outcome: The restrained use of a bold accent stone against a warm neutral base delivered the "hotel spa" mood the homeowners wanted, proving that dramatic marble can be introduced in small, well-placed doses rather than across an entire room.
